Get into golf

Get into Golf is a national campaign to inspire adults to take up golf and to play more often. It is run by England Golf and supported by Sport England National Lottery Funding. Here at Tiverton Golf Club we are an official Get into Golf Partner and run various courses throughout the year.

We have designed the perfect 3 step programme to take anyone from a complete beginner to an active member of our golf club.

Step one - 5 Week Beginners Course - £50

The first step in our programme will see participants introduced to the very basics of playing golf during five one-hour sessions. Over the five weeks we cover the main skills needed to play golf; putting, chipping, bunker play & the full swing. Then on the fifth and final week we take the group out on to the course and put it into practice.

Step two - 3 Week Improvers Course - £60

Following on from the beginners course, the improvers course takes place entirely on the golf course. The sessions are two hours in duration, and as a group we play the course and explain the tactical side of playing the golf course including basic etiquette and rules. You must have completed a Beginners Course to sign up for the Improvers Course.

Step three - Academy Membership - £485

The final step for our new golfers is our Academy Membership. This is designed to continue your learning, allowing you to play the golf course and supporting you with on-going coaching. We will also introduce you to life as a member of Tiverton Golf Club. The Academy Membership provides:

  • Unlimited play on the golf course at off-peak times (after 2pm summer, or 12noon in winter)
  • 5 x coaching sessions with one of our PGA coaches
  • Etiquette and rules sessions (indoor evening classes)
  • Regular Academy Roll-Ups so you can play golf with other Academy members
  • A Tiverton Golf Club Clubhouse card (this gets you discount on food and drink in the clubhouse)
  • The option to purchase equipment from our Pro Shop (everything you need to play the course)
  • Existing Tiverton members act as mentors and will take you under their wing
  • The chance to gain an official WHS handicap
  • You are covered under our club’s insurance scheme

The Academy Membership runs for 12 months from the date you sign up. You must have completed steps one and two of our Get into Golf program to join our Academy.

Frequently Asked Questions

I have never played golf before, am I good enough for Get into Golf?

That’s not a problem at all! We usually have people attend who have never held a golf club before. All the coaching is very simple and easy to understand.

Do I need to bring my own clubs?

No we provide all the equipment for steps 1 and 2, although you are welcome to bring your own clubs with you if you have some. If progressing on to the Academy membership you will need your own clubs. We offer a discounted equipment pack from our Pro Shop at Tiverton, or you can usually pick up some second hand clubs on eBay.

I’m not sure what I should wear – is there a dress code?

We don’t have a dress code for our Get into Golf lessons. We usually recommend smart casual clothing you will feel comfortable playing golf in. Golf shoes are not required for steps 1 and 2, although again you’re welcome to wear an existing pair.

When undertaking the Academy Membership we do require you to wear golf shoes on the course. These can be purchased from our Pro Shop.

Does it cost a lot of money to play golf?

No it can actually provide great value for money. Someone can attend steps 1 and 2 of Get into Golf and spend just £110 for 11 hours coaching with all equipment provided! Our Get into Golf and Academy memberships are also great value offering you heavily discounted golf plus PGA Professional tuition.

Who takes the coaching sessions?

The beginners and improvers courses are group coaching sessions taken by one of our resident PGA golf coaches, Chris Wyatt (Head Professional), Charlie Sampson or Sam Chapman. The 1-on-1 lessons included in the memberships are with the Professional of your choice.

How long does it take to learn golf and join the club permanently?

The time this takes varies depending on each individual’s commitments. It usually takes an average beginner 3-6 months to become competent enough to play the golf course. Our Academy Membership then allows you to keep developing at your own pace.

What dates are courses taking place and how can I sign up?
